I have read countless times that people will put off getting into serious planetary interaction, and wait until the dust settles. (No pun intended.) That's fine, as I no longer own a production alt. I have with that character, spent many hours with the industrial side of Eve Online through tech 1 and primarily tech 2 module and ship production. I have used low sec and high sec and wormhole POSes for moon mining and BPO researching and sleeper killing respectively. This varied POS usage (unfortunately none in 0.0) taught me a few things about the game that is only acquired through POS operation. Their tedious upkeep...
Where do the minerals come from? Ice, no shit... That's easy. I did that while correcting yesterday's math quiz or my student's online french portfolio entries. How about the trade goods? Well, I purchased those from some random NPC right next door! They had better prices (albeight smaller quantities) then if I'd have flown the 12 jumps to a major hub to get a large quantity.
Planetary Interaction will make POS owning a lot more tedious. Let me elaborate...
Where do you sell your T2 ships. Options;
- One jump out of 0.0 close to a large sov holding alliance => ok, but you may sell a bit slow at times as they make their own
- Your local region far from a major hub => your prices are probably higher then Jita (yeah I said it), you will sell slowly if at all
- Your corpmates => Will they pay more then Jita prices? Do you sell for less then the hubs at a low return or even at a loss?
- Lage hub => Undercutting = less revenu per item, however you sell quickly and move lots of product (and no shit, of the three options, people choose this one. If you don't think so just fly around and see how many sell orders are found in just 5 to 6 of the key Hub systems in all of New Eden... Jita, Rens, Amarr etc...)
Now why should PI be any different? It wont... If a player uses PI and makes goods to sell, where will he sell them? Options;
- One jump out of 0.0 close to a large sov holding alliance => same as above, alliances can make their own
- Your local region => same as above, prices WILL be lower in the hubs as their is no floor on the cost of these items really they are "afk" items so basically of no cost to the builder (yeah a few mil for the skill books, big deal)...
- Your corpmates => Same as above, but now you can't run at a loss as it's basically afk production and income
- Lage hub => again, see above
Ownign a POS will now require the owner to fly to a dreaded hub to get the cheapest goods and the larger quantities. They will no longer be next door. In the past, goods were more costly in the hubs as there was a markup for the convenience of making large volume purchases in one place, qhich could not be done through your local NPC vendor.
Hub systems will now be even MORE populated, SLOWER and smaller systems will simply be avoided. This is also happening in my country where people from small towns are moving into the larger cities for work and the simplicity of life... But that's a whole other story... back to Planetary Interaction...
So as I hopefully made clear, CCP is just causing a bigger headache for everyone as the major hubs will simply be bombarded will practically all orders for planetary goods. Yay CCP :(
Another though; As a POS owner, you can sacrifice your planetary slots to make your own goods. But wait a second... That opens up another can of worms. If POS users are using some of their slots to make their own goods, who will be buying the goods that the non POS owners are making? Supply will always surpass demand...
Do I own a POS anymore? No, I sold that character. However, if I did still have him, he'd be maxed PI so that he could run his POSes on the cheap. Unfortunately, without my industrial toon I can no longer correct my students' math quizzes while playing Eve. Pvping does not allow you to be as AFK so I guess I'll be a crappy teacher until I get a mission Dominix. ;)
Cheers, I bet this didn't make sense... It's late
